Everything You Need To Know About Sockets & Switches
How the work is carried out
Adding a socket means spurring from an existing ring or running a fresh cable back to the consumer unit. We chase the wall neatly, run the cable, fit the back box and accessory, and test the circuit before leaving.
Typical timescales
A simple socket addition takes 1 to 2 hours. Swapping out every socket and switch in a 3-bed house for new flat-plate accessories is usually a single day's work.
What to expect on the day
Power on the affected circuit is off while we work, usually under an hour at a time. There's a small amount of plaster dust which we sheet up and clean. We patch chases ready for paint touch-up.
What affects the cost
Cable run distance, wall type (plasterboard vs solid masonry), choice of accessory finish (white plastic, chrome, brushed brass, screwless), and whether outdoor or weatherproof units are involved all factor in.
Outdoor and garden sockets
An outdoor socket needs an IP65-rated unit on its own RCD-protected spur. We can run cable through a wall, along a soffit or underground to garden offices and outbuildings, with a proper weatherproof termination.
